Three Girls Named Ana

Content: A retired railroad worker Marko Petrich enjoys his life as a pensioner until the day he learns that there is a chance his daughter Anna may have survived the war. He starts searching for her through the Red Cross and the press. He gets the files of three different young women each of whom might be his real daughter Anna. At the end, however, the old man comes to the conclusion that the real Anna was killed in the war anyway.

Resume: "Three Annas", the sixth project of "Vardar Film" feature film production, points out its continuous collaboration with all the Yugoslav filmmakers. The central part of the screenplay is occupied by a deep humanistic and touching motif - the fate of a father looking for his daughter lost in the war. It is a film about the hopeless end of the war, which left behind people with lives like nightmares. Unfortunately the great artistic values of the subject matter were not properly used. The screenplay was taken up and finished by Slobodan Glumac, the author, and Branko Bauer, the director, while the dialogues were elaborated by Arsen Diklic. In spite of all the effort the story remained feuilletonic in its approach, which damaged the impression. This mostly stylistic discrepancy is evident in all the expressive structures of the film.
For Macedonian filmmakers engaged in this project, this was a chance to share their experience with their colleagues’ ability to expand their horizons. The team consisted of Branko Blazhina, director of photography, Dushan Gaic and Vase Vasilevski, his assistants, Vladimir Tey, art director, Nikola Lazarevski, assistant art director, and Blagoia Angelovski and Risto Teofilovski, unit managers. The cast included Dushan Stefanov, Marija Kon, Svetlana Mishkovic, Dubravka Gal, Janez Vrhovec, Tito Stroci, Branko Tatic, Velimir Hitil and Josip Maroti. Another value moving higher than the ordinarily of our film narrative is achieved trough the direction which builds the dramatic space on familiar images recognized in their own time. In thus way it becomes a valuable witness as well as a remarkable and outstanding example of dramatic functionality.
