It is set during World War II in Macedonia’s capital Skopje, when Yugoslavia falls under the Fascist regime and Eastern Macedonia is occupied by the Bulgarian Nazis. Soul Mates is a reminder of the Sephardic Jewish influence on European history as characters confront power relationships and comes to terms with the meaning of justice. Director: Marija Makeska was born in Skopje in 1986. Flirting with the idea of an acting career in college, she decided it wasn't the thing for her and decided to become a filmmaker. She was awarded a Stipend Award for Project Soul Mates. Project Soul Mates was promoted on national TV in Macedonia, the internet, and was a selection for the 2003 Film Festival in Skopje, Macedonia. Other films (narratives) of hers are My Dog Rania (2008), It's a Small World (2009), and she currently has another one in production Slippery People, and will be finished by the end of 2009.
