Synopsis:

This is a story of love and loss, of betrayal and revenge in the time of the Ottoman Empire. A young Turkish soldier in Monastir (Turkish name for Bitola), Mustafa Kemal, later known as Kemal Ataturk, falls in love with a Macedonian girl, Eleni, whose father opposes their marriage. She resigns herself to waiting, and after the death of her father, she is left alone with her younger brother, Duko, and her sister, Andja. After Andja’s fiance is murdered by a Turk, Andja is kidnapped and held against her will in a harem. Loyalties are shattered and family bonds are strained as an empire crumbles and the sisters learn that the only true meaning of life is love.

Biography:


Aleksandar Popovski was born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1969. He graduated from the University of “Ss. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje, with a BA in Film and Drama.


His first professional debut was in the theatre in 1992, where he directed a play written by the Macedonian author Dejan Dukovski.

He started his film career in 1993 with the film omnibus “LIGHT GRAY” (Mitrevski – Popovski – Janicievic), produced by TRFZ Pegaz, Macedonia.

In 1995, he co-directed the TV series “BOO, YOU TAILORS!” with Darko Mitrevski, produced by the Macedonian National Television.

In 1998, he co-directed the film “GOODBYE 20TH CENTURY” with Darko Mitrevski, produced by First Partizans Production, Macedonia. This film participated in film festivals in Stockholm, Barcelona, Puerto Rico, CINEQUEST – San Francisco, Dresden, New York, Helsinki, Zurich, Calcutta, FEST Belgrade, Palm Beach, Palm Springs, Cottbus, Tromso, Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Rome, Milan, Brussels, Stuttgart. It was awarded Melies D’Argent at the Helsinki Film Festival for the best European film in the field of the fantastic, B – Movie Award at the New York Film Festival for the best editing and the best set design, King Nobel at the First Internet Film Festival – Brussel, and the FantaFestival – Roma for the best actor.

In 2008 Aleksandar Popovski directed the short film “METAMORPHOSES”, co-produced by Kino Oko Production and Partysans Production.


His film “BALKAN IS NOT DEAD”, produced by Kino Oko Production, is currently in post-production.
